Bizen no Kuni Ichimonji.
An unsigned naginata-naoshi displaying the workmanship of the Fukuoka Ichimonji school.
The blade is forged with a brilliant choji-midare of dynamic variation, clearly exhibiting the distinctive characteristics of the school.
Attributed to the mid to late Kamakura period.
Blade length: 2 shaku 2 sun 5 bu.
Written by Tanzan during the Cocoon Month of the Hinoe-Saru year (kao).
(We divide 4 sections for each sword as Saijyo Saku, Jyojyo Saku, Jyo Saku and Regular Saku).
This blade is ranked as Saijyo Saku among works attributed to Mumei (Ichimonji).
Habaki: Single gold-foiled habaki.
Blade Length: 68.2 cm (26.85 in).
Curvature: 1.0 cm (0.39 in).
Mekugi Hole: 2.
Width at Base (Motohaba): 2.98 cm (1.17 in).
Thickness of rim (Kasane): 0.72 cm (0.28 in).
Sword Weight: 695 g.
Era: Mid Kamakura period, around 1238 CE (Ryakunin era).
Shape: A naginata-naoshi with a wide mihaba, relatively thin kasane, shallow curvature, and an elegant overall form.
Jigane: Itame hada mixed with mokume hada, covered with ji-nie. Fine chikei are visible, together with vivid midare-utsuri.
Hamon: A brilliant choji-midare with a deep nioiguchi, incorporating kaeruko-choji and juka-choji. The interior of the hamon is rich in activity, including ashi, sunagashi, and yo. The boshi is yakizume with a hakikake finish. The blade beautifully displays the magnificent style of the Fukuoka Ichimonji school.
Features: The Bizen Ichimonji tradition began in the early Kamakura period. Based on stylistic characteristics, the earliest works closely related to the Ko-Bizen tradition are known as Ko-Ichimonji, the brilliant mid-period works are classified as Fukuoka Ichimonji, and the later works are referred to as Yoshioka Ichimonji. Other branches include Katayama Ichimonji and Iwato Ichimonji. This blade is an outstanding example of Fukuoka Ichimonji, displaying vivid utsuri and a magnificent choji-midare with dramatic variations in height and rhythm.
Koshirae:
Tsuba: Abumi-gata (stirrup-shaped) iron tsuba carved with paulownia blossoms, decorated with gold nunome-zogan.
Fuchikashira: Shakudo ground carved with an all-over cherry blossom design, highlighted with gold iroe.
Saya (Scabbard): Black lacquered saya decorated with finely sprinkled blue mother-of-pearl, cloud motifs, three-oak-leaf crests, and carved bands around the lower section.
Menuki: Yamagane ground carved with praying mantis motifs, decorated with gold iroe.
