This blade is ranked as Jyojyo Saku among the works attributed to Mumei (First Generation Echizen Yasutsugu).

Shape: A broad-bladed katana with a bohi and soe-bi on the omote, futasuji-hi and a bonji engraving on the ura, katakiriha construction, and a wide kissaki. The blade has an excellent overall shape, and the tang bears both a kiritsuke-mei and a tameshimei. Acopy of the Atagi Sadamune(安宅貞宗）

Jigane: Well-forged ko-itame hada with a finely worked and slightly standing grain, producing a beautiful jigane.
Hamon: Nie-deki gunome-midare with a deep nioiguchi.

Features: At first glance, this blade conveys an impression of exceptional cutting ability. It displays the characteristic Keicho Shinto sugata with an elongated kissaki and excellent overall workmanship. It was authenticated by the NBTHK as an unsigned work attributed to the First Generation Echizen Yasutsugu, an attribution that is considered entirely appropriate.

This work is a copy of the Atagi Sadamune(安宅貞宗）, one of the celebrated swords recorded in the Kyoho Meibutsu Cho. It is known as “Atagi-giri,” and is also called “Snow Falling on Water.” The name refers to the way snow disappears as it falls upon water, as though being drawn into it, expressing the idea of a sword cutting through its target so effortlessly that the blade seems to be drawn into it.

It is said that the first-generation Echizen Yasutsugu made several copies of the Atagi Sadamune(安宅貞宗, and modern swordsmiths have also chanllenged to produce examples. The horimono follows a prescribed design consisting of a suken, kuwagata, renge, bonji, and futasuji-hi.

The blade is further distinguished by its gold-inlaid tameshimei, katakiriha construction, and elaborate horimono, making it a highly desirable example that we can confidently recommend.
