Sayagaki by Mr. Tanobe:
This sword bears the five-character signature of Kurihara Chikuzen no Kami Nobuhide, together with the date of Keiō 2 (1866).
The blade displays a powerful and dignified sform that is characteristic of its period. The jigane is a well-forged itame with abundant ji-nie and prominent chikei. The hamon is wide and based on a lively gunome-midare pattern, featuring ashi, plentiful nie, and is further enhanced by sunagashi and kinsuji. The bōshi is deeply tempered, ending in an ōmaru on the omote side and a komaru on the ura side. Altogether, this is a vibrant and masterfully executed work that faithfully reflects Nobuhide’s distinctive style and craftsmanship.

Kurihara Nobuhide was a swordsmith of the late Edo period, born in Echigo Province, and a disciple of MInamoto Kiyomaro. After working as a metalsmith in Kyoto for 20 years, he turned to swordsmithing around the early Kan’ei era and later spent several years in Edo studying under Kiyomaro. It is presumed that his career change was influenced by the cultural climate of Kyoto, where he was likely exposed to restorationist and loyalist ideologies.
By around 1852, Nobuhide had established himself as an independent swordsmith. Recognized for his exceptional skill, he was later commissioned by the Tokugawa Shogunate to forge swords while serving at important locations such as Uraga and Osaka. In 1865, he was granted the honorary title of Chikuzen no Kami.
