Description:
An iron tsuba in a chrysanthemum-shaped form with a polished surface, featuring a Bukan Sukashi design rendered in ji-sukashi openwork and enhanced with fine kebori engraving.

dditional Note:
The Hayashi School flourished in Higo Province from the early Edo period through the end of the Edo period, tracing its origins to Hayashi Matashichi (active from the Keicho era, 1596–1615). Together with the Hirata, Nishigaki, and Shimizu schools, it formed the four major traditions of Higo metalwork.

Many works of the Hayashi School are sukashi tsuba (openwork sword guards), primarily fashioned from iron. Their iron exhibits excellent patination, developing a rich and attractive yokan-like dark brown color, and is highly regarded for its superior texture and quality.
