Special feature:Awataguchi Ikkanshi Tadatsuna was a swordsmith from Osaka,
succeeded to his house in Enpo 4(1677), when his father passed away.
He called himself as Asai Mandayu, and his first sword smith name was Tanakuni.
Go(trade name) was Ikkanshi or Goshoken, he was an export of Tokenbori(sword engraving).
He moved to Tokiwacho in Osaka, made great swords until middle of the Kyoho era(1716-1735), at the age of 80.

From Aoi Art:
Awataguchi Ikkanshi Tadatsuna 2nd generation has made a lot of work with
these characteristics:Niedeki Ashinaga-choji with Sunagashi, Suguha Yakidasi Dai-
gunome-midare, Doramba, Suguha with deep Nioikuchi.
Jigane is made of the finest one From Osaka-jigane.
What made him very famous is especially his skills at sword engraving.
Kenmaki-Ryu(dragon winding itself round a sword), Tamaoi-ryu(dragon
chasing balls), and Bairyu(dragon winding itself round a plum tree), which he was very
good at engraving. This work has a wonderful Jigane with close Hada, and the bright
and solid Hamon which has deep Nioikuchi describes deep waves. The engraving is
outstanding: deep engraving for scales, sharpness of the nails and eyes. There are full
of characteristics of his identity as a swordsmith. There is Ububa left, Yasurime on the
Nakago(stem) is very clear, which we can say that this work has been preserved for a
long time. We truly recommend this masterpiece for you.
Background:In the Edo period, the war of the Muromachi period has come to an end,
people lived calm and moderately, which has made a culture of Chonin(townspeople).
The demand for Nihonto decreased drastically, and in around Kanbun era(1661-1672)
swordsmiths started to make swords for Samurai. There came pieces like: shaper and
shaper, with Saidanmei(cutting test), Doranba with beautiful Hamon, Hizento with
beautiful Masamehada Jigane, and sword engraving…we have a background in which
they compete by the beauty of the swords. Probably they had a kind of appreciation
party because it became peaceful. In any case, it was the most gorgeous time for
Nihonto, but at the same time many of the swordsmiths quitted making swords. This is a
masterpiece we can definitely recommend for you.
