Katana in Shirasaya
Signature: Oku Yamato no Kami Taira Ason Motohira (Not Guaranteed Authentic)
奥大和守平朝臣元平(無保証)
Sayagaki (Inscription on the Shirasaya):
Katana, Tachi-mei: Oku Yamato no Kami Taira Ason Motohira.
Bamboo carving on the reverse side.
Blade Length: 66.4 cm (26.14 in), equivalent to 2 shaku 1 sun 9 bu.
The jigane is bright and clear, displaying beautiful mokume hada mixed with flowing masame hada resembling imozuru (potato vines).
The signature is engraved in tachi-mei style, and a bamboo carving is present on the reverse side of the nakago.
This is an outstanding representative work from the early career of the first-generation Motohira.
(We divide 4 sections for each sword as Saijyo Saku, Jyojyo Saku, Jyo Saku and Regular Saku).
This blade is ranked as Jyo Saku among works signed Oku Yamato no Kami Taira Ason Motohira (authenticity not guaranteed).
Habaki: Double silver-foiled habaki.
Blade Length: 66.4 cm (26.14 in).
Curvature: 1.9 cm (0.75 in).
Mekugi Hole: 1.
Width at Base (Motohaba): 3.43 cm (1.35 in).
Width at Yokote: 2.44 cm (0.96 in).
Thickness of rim (Kasane): 0.71 cm (0.28 in).
Sword Weight: 840 g.
Era: Late Edo period.
Shape: A beautifully proportioned katana with a substantial mihaba, moderate curvature, and a slightly elongated kissaki.
Jigane: Beautifully refined and well-forged ko-itame hada, displaying fine-quality steel.
Hamon: Nie-deki gunome-midare with rounded gunome formations.
Features: One of the distinctive characteristics of Oku Yamato no Kami Taira Ason Motohira’s workmanship is that the central ridge of the nakago is deliberately positioned slightly off-center rather than running precisely along the middle.
Furthermore, near the nakago-jiri (end of the tang), this ridge exhibits a characteristic shift from its original alignment.
These distinctive features are not present on this sword.
Therefore, the signature can be judged to be gimei (false signature).
Although the shirasaya bears a sayagaki by Hon’ami Tsunemasa, unfortunately, the signature on the blade is considered not genuine.
AoiArt estimation paper: Whole Oshigata.
