Features: Yoshihara Shoji, swordsmith name Kuniie, was born on February 17, 1945, and was raised in Katsushika, Tokyo. He received numerous prestigious awards, including the Commissioner for Cultural Affairs Award, the Kunzan Award, and the Kanzan Award. Among modern swordsmiths, he was recognized for his exceptional skill and was granted the distinguished title of Mukansa Swordsmith, awarded only to the finest craftsmen. A modern Mukansa Swordsmith is one who has achieved the highest level of mastery by winning ten or more Special Awards at the NBTHK Annual Competition for Newly Made Swords. He also appeared as a swordsmith in the film The Last Samurai (2003). In 2008, he was designated a Holder of Tokyo Metropolitan Intangible Cultural Property. He passed away on May 28, 2023, at the age of 78.
