Habaki: Single-layer habaki of plain copper (Suaka) with silver coloring.

Shape: A slightly small-sized tanto.
Jigane: A well-forged and refined jigane.
Shirake utsuri appears within the tightly compacted jigane.
Hamon: Nioi-deki, suguha.
The boshi turns back in a round shape.

Features: The signature on this tanto is unquestionably genuine.
There are some minor old blemishes, but we believe it is a respectable piece overall.
The nakago has one mekugi-ana and is signed “Bishu Osafune Sukesada Saku,” along with the date “A date in August, 1582 (Tensho 10).”

Aoi Art’s Comment: This tanto was made in the late Muromachi period, during the Azuchi-Momoyama era, and is a work of 483 years ago.

Historical Background: On June 2, 1582 (Tensho 10), the Honno-ji Incident took place, in which Oda Nobunaga was forced to take his own life at Honno-ji Temple following the rebellion of his retainer Akechi Mitsuhide.
