Historical Background: The Jokyo era (1684–1688) fell during the reign of the fifth Tokugawa shogun, Tokugawa Tsunayoshi. It was a period of significant historical change, including the introduction of Japan’s own Jokyo calendar and the beginning of policies that would later become known as the Shorui Awaremi no Rei (Edicts on Compassion for Living Things). These measures, first issued during this period, had a profound impact on society and later developed into an extensive animal protection policy. The era also preceded the flourishing Genroku culture.
