Historical Background: During the Manji era (1658–1661), Japan was recovering from the Great Fire of Meireki. Major reconstruction projects included the rebuilding of the Honmaru Palace of Edo Castle and the establishment of the Jōbikeshi (permanent firefighting units). During this period, disagreements also arose between the Imperial Court and the Tokugawa Shogunate regarding the selection of era names. In 1659 (Manji 2), the reconstruction of the Honmaru of Edo Castle, destroyed in the previous year’s fire, was completed.
