Shape: A slightly longer-than-average wakizashi.
Jigane: Well-forged ko-itame hada mixed with fine mokume, producing an exceptionally refined steel surface.
Hamon: A bright and clear suguha. The boshi returns in a rounded form.

Features: Banshu Tegarayama Roku Fujiwara Ujishige belonged to the Himeji school of swordsmiths, a lineage that continued through five generations. The smith of this blade was the son of the first-generation Ujishige and was also known as Miki Shinbei. After retiring, he took Buddhist vows and signed his works “Tanka.” He passed away on the 25th day of the 12th month of Tenmei 3 (1783).

Koizumi Sadayoshi (also read Katagiri Sadayoshi) was the sixth lord of the Koizumi Domain in Yamato Province and held the court rank of Junior Fifth Rank, Lower Grade, with the title of Iwami no Kami. He succeeded to the domain following his father’s death, was granted an audience with Shogun Tokugawa Ieshige on the 1st day of the 10th month of Horeki 6 (1756), and on the 18th day of the 12th month of the same year was appointed Junior Fifth Rank, Lower Grade, Iwami no Kami. He died on June 18, Bunka 2 (1805). His posthumous Buddhist name was Shojuken Gakushuku Soshu Koji, and his grave is located at Tokaiji Temple in Kita-Shinagawa. This wakizashi was specially forged by Banshu Tegarayama Roku Fujiwara Ujishige for Koizumi Sadayoshi and is a work made from steel of the highest quality.

Historical Background: In An’ei 5 (1776), Hiraga Gennai reconstructed an electrostatic generator in Japan, while overseas the United States issued the Declaration of Independence. The reigning shogun of the Edo shogunate at that time was the 10th shogun, Tokugawa Ieharu.
