Features: The Yamato Tegai School is believed to have originated from swordsmiths who lived outside the Tengai Gate, located in front of Todai-ji Temple in Nara, and who were likely affiliated with the temple.
During this period, the powerful temples of Nara maintained armed forces, and the principal Yamato schools—including Hosho, Taima, Shikkake, Tegai, and Senjuin—each served a different temple.
The founder of the Tegai School is traditionally regarded as Kanenaga, who was active during the mid-Kamakura period.
Among the Yamato traditions, the Tegai School flourished the most and is distinguished by strong nie, together with bright and vividly refined jigane.
