Features: Masamune was a swordsmith active in Kamakura, Sagami Province, from the late Kamakura period to the Nanbokucho period. He studied under Shintogo Kunimitsu, perfected the Soshu tradition, and went on to influence many later swordsmiths. Because only a limited number of signed works survive, he became an almost legendary figure, and numerous stories and anecdotes were created about him in later generations. His works have long been treasured, with nine swords designated as National Treasures and ten as Important Cultural Properties.
This blade bears a sayagaki written by the Meiji-period appraiser Honami Choshiki 本阿弥長識, and the attribution was later endorsed by NBTHK.
The activities within both the jigane and hamon are remarkably intense, creating a powerful and exceptional appearance that deeply impresses the viewer. It is a magnificent work that fully justifies the attribution to Masamune.
Unfortunately, there is a flaw on the ura side of the blade. However, because the blade is thin, extreme caution should be exercised regarding any additional polishing.
