This work is ranked as Jyo Saku for Esshu Mitsuyuki.
Habaki: Single-layer silver.
Blade Length: 28.7 cm (11.30 in).
Curvature: 0.5 cm (0.20 in).
Mekugi Hole: 2.
Width at Base (Motohaba): 2.91 cm (1.15 in).
Thickness of rim (Kasane): 0.36 cm (0.14 in).
Sword Weight: 175 g.
Era: Late Nanbokucho period, around Kakei (1387).
Shape: A typical hira-zukuri tanto of the Nanbokucho period with wide mihaba and thin kasane.
Jigane: Well-forged ko-itame hada.
Hamon: A wide hitatsura-style hamon, and it was appraised by the Japanese Sword Museum as Mumei attributed to Esshu Mitsuyuki.
Features: It is considered to have been attributed to Esshu Mitsuyuki of the Nanbokucho period due to its wide mihaba and thin kasane. Ecchu Mitsuyuki was a student of the rai kuniyuki and a son of the kuninaga. He was a swordsmith of Echizen provinceand acctive in the end of Nanbokucho period. That school was called as Echizen Rai. There are many Sunagashi and Kinsuji in the Ha. The swordsmiths who is descended from Rai school of Kyo moved to Echizen province. Originally, that swordsmiths made Yamashiro Den blades. And it may have been strongly infuenced by Soshu Den.
Historical Background: 1387 (Kakei 1 / Genchu 4) was during Japan’s Nanbokucho period (Muromachi period), when Ashikaga Yoshimitsu, the third shogun of the Muromachi shogunate, was expanding his power. Major events include the construction of Shimizu Castle by Shimazu Motohisa of the Satsuma Shimazu clan in present-day Kagoshima City, laying the foundation for the castle town of Kagoshima. Additionally, the Muromachi shogunate exploited internal succession disputes within the Toki clan, the shugo daimyo of Mino Province, and used this as an opportunity to carry out their subjugation.
