Aoi Art’s Comment: This sword is by the 5th generation of (Kikumon) Iga no Kami Fujiwara Kanemichi. The title “Master Swordsmith of Japan” inscribed on the blade indicates that the first generation was granted the authority by the Emperor to oversee all swordsmiths, assign names and titles such as “no Kami” and “Daijō”, and supervise the sword-making community—a role that continued into the late Edo period.

Historical Background: In the late Edo period, swords increasingly shifted from practical use to decorative and collectible items.
Blades signed by prominent smiths such as (Kikumon) Iga no Kami Fujiwara Kanemichi and adorned with flamboyant tōranba hamon became highly sought after.
