Width at Base (Motohaba): 2.97 cm (1.17 in)
Width at Tip (Sakihaba): 2.51 cm (0.99 in)
Thickness of rim (Kasane): 0.62 cm (0.24 in)
Era: Late Muromachi period
Shape: A wakizashi with wide mihaba, deep curvature, and a flat construction.
Jigane: Well-forged ko-itame hada with beautiful steel, showing shirake utsuri.
Hamon: Nie-based with continuous small gunome-midare; the bōshi is round and returns slightly long.
Features: This blade was judged as Mumei (Shimada) by the Token Museum.
The Shimada school was active from the early Muromachi period, inheriting the Soshu tradition and incorporating the style of Masahiro.
Shimada Yoshisuke, the founder, trained many students, and their works often reflect Soshu-den characteristics.
Aoi Art’s Comment: This piece has a very beautiful jigane.
It is regrettable that it is unsigned.
