Special Feature: Gassan Sadakazu 1st generation was a sword smith in Settsu. His real name is Gassan Yagoro. He was born in February in 1836 in Koshu Sukoshimura, and adopted by Gassan Sadayoshi at the age of 7. He started sword making training when he was 11, and mastered Ayasugi-hada at the age of 20. He didn’t stop making swords after the Haitorei (decrees abolishing the wearing of swords in public) in 1877, and in 1892 he exhibited a sword at the World’s Columbian Exposition and won an award, the sword was bought by Meiji Tenno in the next year. He was appointed to an Imperial Household Artist in April of 1906. He was also a famous sculptor. He passed away at the age of 84 in 1918. His sword production period is from 1850(at the age of 15) to 1918. His Jigane often has well-grained Koitame, to be like plain with Jinie, and sometimes has Utsuri, Masame-hada or Ayasugi-hada. Engraving was his best speciality, and he was really good at both simple ones like Bonji/Gomabashi/Hatahoko/Frass Kurikara, and difficult ones like Fudomyouo/Kurikara Dragon/ Dragon/Tiger. He is Gassan Sadakatsu’s father.

From Aoi Art: This work was made in Showa 11. Those days, nobody had imagined that Japan would have a war against USA, in peace, and sword smiths had more time to make swords: they could make swords far more elaborately. This work has great Jigane with Masamedeki filled with lines, and Hamon of Gunomemidare: a true well-made work. Polishing had been nicely done, well-shaped, and there is lots of Ububa left. We truly recommend this one for you.
