Aoi Art’s Comment: The inscription “An Auspicious Day in October, Keiō 2, Hinoe-Tora” corresponds to November 1866 in the Gregorian calendar. This was a turbulent period at the end of the Edo era. During the Second Choshu Campaign, large numbers of shogunate troops were stationed in Osaka, causing rice prices to soar. The resulting hardship led to the large-scale Osaka Uchikowashi (urban riots), reflecting the widespread social unrest of the time.
