Sukemitsu is regarded as the leading smith of the Yoshioka Ichimonji school and is considered the most accomplished craftsman among them. Existing signed works are dated to the Gen’ō, Genkyō, Kareki, and Gentoku (1319–1331)
This sword remains in an almost original shape. In addition to the the signature “Ichi” (一),which is the character of Ichimonji, it retains the long inscription “Bizen no Kuni Yoshioka-jū Sakon Shōkan (kan is illegible part),” from which it can be attributed to Sukemitsu.
The jigane is finely forged with delicate nie and a distinct utsuri. Although the hamon is primarily in a suguha mixed with gunome and choji, it is enriched with fine ko-nie and abundant patterns, creating a lively and intricate appearance. It is an exceptionally well-executed work.
