Habaki: Solid copper single layer.
Blade Length: 56.2 cm (22.13 in).
Curvature: 1.1 cm (0.43 in).
Mekugi Hole: 2.
Width at Base (Motohaba): 3.07 cm (1.21 in).
Width at Yokote (Sakihaba): 2.04 cm (0.80 in).
Thickness (Kasane): 0.73 cm (0.29 in).
Sword Weight: 620 grams.
Era: Edo period, around Joo era (1652).
Shape: Suriage with machi-okuri, yet a solid and healthy blade.
Jigane: Ko-itame hada well forged, forming a beautiful jihada.
Hamon: Ko-nie deki, small gunome-midare with active ashi and sunagashi.
Features: Bungo swords are often solidly made, and up until around the Kanbun era many works were of superior quality.
However, it is said that in some cases the quality declined in later periods.
This work shows small gunome-midare, with active ashi toward the rear of the temper line, and is a well-made example.
Koshirae:
Tsuba: Round iron tsuba with openwork design of dragonflies and butterflies.
Signature: Edo Ju Akao Yoshitsugu.
Fuchikashira: Engraved with iris and birds, decorated with gold color inlay.
Menuki: Figures design engraved and finished with gold color inlay.
Saya (Scabbard): Kawari-nuri style saya.
