Kaifu refers to a school of swordsmiths from Awa Province (present-day Kaifu-cho, Tokushima Prefecture), with origins dating back to the late Nanbokucho period.
There are theories that the founders were smiths like Morihisa and Ujiyoshi.
This piece, with its thick kasane, clear jigane texture, and deeply nioiguchi straight hamon, is considered a work from the late Edo period.
