Kunisada was born in Hyuga and later became a disciple of Echigo no Kami Kuniyuki.
Although once believed to have studied under Kunihiro, this seems to be a mistake.
In Genna 9 (1623), he received the title “Izumi no Kami”.
In his later years, due to ill health, many works were made by his son, the second-generation Shinkai, as dai-saku (substitute work).
He passed away on May 5th of Keian 5 (1652) at the age of 63.
