The design depicts the famous Chinese historical episode of “Huang Shigong and Zhang Liang,” intricately carved in high relief with iroe (colored metal inlay) on a shakudō nanako ground.

Supplement:
The scene shows Zhang Liang retrieving a shoe that Huang Shigong had deliberately thrown into a river. In the story, Zhang Liang bravely battles a dragon god to retrieve the shoe, riding on a dragon to return it. Huang Shigong is depicted on horseback.
