Era: Late Edo period, circa 19th century
Shape: A slightly compact mitsumune Tanto
Jigane: ko-itame hada is tightly forged, with subtle masame flowing toward the edge, creating a refined and unobtrusive grain.
Hamon: Gunome and Notare with nie making sunagashi.

Features: Aizu Motooki was a swordsmith active in Aizu around the end of the Edo period. The 1st-generation Motooki (Kaku Daihachi Motooki) studied under Suishinshi Masahide and initially took the name Hidekuni, using one character from his master’s name. He later studied under Oku Yamato no Kami Motohira in Satsuma and changed his name to Motooki, again taking one character from his new master’s name.
The second-generation Motooki (Shoken Motooki), grandson of the first generation, studied under the seventh-generation Ishido Unju Korekazu. He was highly favored by Matsudaira Katamori, lord of the Aizu domain, who was appointed Kyoto Shugoshoku (Kyoto Military Commissioner), and Moto-oki accompanied him to Kyoto, where he forged swords for Aizu retainers and members of the Shinsengumi.

Kurikata: Iron with a floral motif.
Menuki: Circular menuki in high relief, decorated with gold iroe.
