In addition to the seven-character signature, the blade bears the supplementary inscription “以南蛮鉄 ” (made using Nanban iron).

Kunitsugu was the foremost disciple of Dewa Daijo Kunimichi, and some works were made jointly with his master. He was initially granted the title Echizen Daijo and was later promoted to Echizen no Kami. In his later years, he moved to Higo Province, where he continued to forge swords.

This work dates from around the Kanbun era (1661–1673), during the smith’s later years. It displays a powerful and imposing shape. Both the jihada and hamon are of excellent quality, and the blade is also preserved in excellent condition.

Shape: wide, thick, long and straight blade with short kissaki.
Jigane: packed grain patterns of koitame and komokume with fine chikei.

Features:
Echigo no Kami Fujiwara Kunitsugu is said to have been either the son or a student of Dewa Daijo Kunimichi. His workmanship closely resembles that of Kunimichi. He is believed to have worked under Kunimichi for many years, and his surviving works are fewer in number than those of Kunimichi.
This piece is a long and robust blade with a beautifully tight and well-forged jihada.
