This blade is ranked as Jyo Saku among the works attributed to Mumei (Kongo Byoe).
Habaki: Double gold-foiled habaki.
Blade Length: 46.4 cm (18.27 in).
Curvature: 1.0 cm (0.39 in).
Mekugi Hole: 3.
Width at Base (Motohaba): 2.70cm
Width at Yokote: 1.94cm
Thickness of rim (Kasane): 0.40cm
Sword Weight: 445 g.
Era: Muromachi period, around the Meio era (1492–1501).
Shape: Suriage with the machi moved upward (machi-okuri) at the lower portion. The kissaki is slightly elongated.
Jigane: Ko-itame mixed with mokume hada, with a faint utsuri visible.
Hamon: Nie-deki, primarily suguha with gentle notare. The boshi returns in a rounded form.
Features: The name Kongo Byoe refers to Moritaka of Chikuzen Province. His works are predominantly characterized by suguha hamon, and the nakago-jiri is typically shaped like a toba (stupa). This blade displays the classic characteristics of the Kongo Byoe school, featuring a suguha hamon with visible utsuri and a rounded boshi. The gently undulating hamon and overall workmanship make it an excellent example.
Koshirae:
Tsuba: Round iron tsuba with openwork design.
Fuchi: Shakudo nanako ground carved with family crests and decorated with gold iroe.
Kashira: Horn.
Saya (Scabbard): Black roiro lacquer saya.
Menuki: Shakudo menuki depicting flowing water and birds, highlighted with gold iroe.
Kozuka: Iron kozuka decorated with a lobster in brass.
Kogatana: Included.
Aoi Art’s Comment: Although unsigned, this blade has been authenticated as Mumei (Kongo Byoe). Together with its attractive koshirae, it is a fine and highly appealing sword.
