March, Showa Kinoe-Tatsu (1964).
Kozan.

O-Wazamono: Saijyo-saku: Bizen.
(We divide 4 sections for each sword as Saijyo Saku, Jyojyo Saku, Jyo Saku and Regular Saku).
This blade is ranked as Jyojyo Saku among the works of Bizen no Kuni ju Osafune Hikobei no Jo Sukesada.

Habaki: Double-layer gold-covered habaki.
Blade Length: 70.61 cm (27.80 in).
Curvature: 1.82 cm (0.72 in).
Mekugi Hole: 2.
Width at Base (Motohaba): 3.05 cm (1.20 in).
Width at Yokote: 2.12 cm (0.83 in).
Thickness of rim (Kasane): 0.76 cm (0.30 in).
Sword Weight: 780 g.
Era: Muromachi period, around the Tensho era (1573-1592).
Shape: Approximately 3 cm (1.18 in) of suriage with the machi moved upward (machi-okuri).
Jigane: Well-forged ko-itame hada with a fine steel texture and visible utsuri.
Hamon: Nie-deki suguha with small ashi.
The boshi becomes irregular toward the tip.

Features: Among the Sukesada smiths, famous masters include Yosazaemon, Hikobei, and Genbei.
Hikobei no Jo Sukesada was the father of Yosazaemon no Jo Sukesada and was active from the Meio era (1492-1501) through the Eisho era (1504-1521).
This blade, however, is a work from around the Tensho era and is an outstanding example of suguha workmanship.

Koshirae:
Tsuba: Round polished shakudo tsuba with a gold fukurin rim.
Fuchikashira: Shakudo ground decorated with gold designs.
Signed: Takase Eiju (kao).
Saya (Scabbard): Black lacquered saya.
Menuki: Aoi crest design with gold iroe.
Kogai: Shakudo nanako ground carved with an Aoi crest and decorated with gold iroe.
Kozuka: Shakudo nanako ground carved with an Aoi crest and decorated with gold iroe.
Including kogatana signed: Senjuin Monju Shiro Kanenobu.

Aoi Art’s Comment: This blade is an excellent example of suguha workmanship with active ashi throughout the hamon.
The koshirae is also of outstanding quality.
It is further enhanced by the presence of a sayagaki by Kozan-sensei. Highly recommended.
