Features:
The Bingo Hokke school is said to have originated in the late Kamakura period, when Sukekane moved from Bizen to Fukuyama. It represents a group of swordsmiths from Bingo Province who were mainly active from the Nanbokucho period through the Muromachi period. Their works often display a Yamato-influenced character, such as Masame patterns on Shinogi-ji and a straight hamon with slight fraying (hotsure).
This piece is a well-made work with the solid, robust shape characteristic of the Nanbokucho period. Its long length, along with the absence of grooves (hi), allowing for clear appreciation of the shinogi-ji, are particularly desirable features.
