“Kimi-banzai” (君万歳) is an expression wishing for the prosperity of another. It often refers to one’s lord or the Emperor, though not exclusively. This sword is thought to be from the Shinshintō (late Edo to Meiji) period. In the late Edo period, likely under the strong influence of the Sonnō Jōi movement, swords inscribed with same slogan are occasionally seen.
