Historical Background: In the late Kamakura period, dissatisfaction with the Hojo clan’s autocratic rule increased, while Emperor Go-Daigo actively promoted movements to overthrow the shogunate.
At the same time, the monetary economy spread and commerce developed, while many gokenin (vassals) fell into serious financial hardship, leading to an era of turmoil that ultimately resulted in the fall of the Kamakura shogunate.
Reasons often cited for the fall of the Kamakura shogunate include political instability, Emperor Go-Daigo’s anti-shogunate movement, inability to respond to climate changes, the spread of the monetary economy, and the activities of lawless groups.
However, the decisive reason is still not fully understood.
Once the momentum to overthrow the shogunate began to build, the anti-shogunate forces expanded rapidly in a short period of time.
