Features: Most ofKawai Hisayuki(Kyuko)’s works were made after the age of 50.
He passed away in September, 1868 (Meiji 1) at the age of 83.
It is deeply impressive that he was able to produce such a long blade while preserving much of the original edge (ubuha).

Aoi Art’s Comment: This is a katana with a blade length of 84.6 cm (33.31 in).
It retains a long ubuha and has been well-polished.
It is likely to have been regarded as an exceptional piece even at the time of its creation.
The narrow shinogi width clearly reflects the characteristics of that period.

Historical Context: In 1876 (Meiji 9), the Haitōrei (Sword Abolishment Edict) was officially issued.
All swordsmiths were forced to cease their work.
No one was allowed to continue sword production, and they had to transition to other occupations.
Since all sword-making stopped at once, it must have been a time of significant upheaval.
The spirit of the samurai who kept these swords in their homes and preserved them until the later Meiji period must have been truly remarkable.
From the later Meiji era into the Taisho period, sword-making was permitted again, and many swords were produced.
