“Xu You and Chaofu”
This painting depicts the legendary recluses Xu You and Chaofu, symbols of humility and virtue in ancient China. According to legend, Xu You declined an offer of kingship from Emperor Yao and washed his ears in a stream to cleanse himself of the proposal. Chaofu, seeing this, felt even the stream was now tainted, and moved his cattle to another source of water.
