According to our standards, this blade is ranked as Jōjōsaku (Excellent Work) for the smith Yamato no Kami Yasusada.

Habaki: Gold foiled single Habaki.
Blade Length: 2 shaku 3 sun 4 bu (71.0cm / 27.9in)
Curvature: 3 bu (0.9cm / 0.4in)

Width at Base (Motohaba): 3.0cm (1.2in)

Era: the early Edo period around mid-17th century.
Shape: slightly wide blade with small Sori.
Jigane: fine Itame hada with Jinie
Hamon: Nie base thick Gunome and Notare. Boshi is rounded with deep nioikuchi.

Features: Yamato Kami Yasusada is said to have learned from Yasutsugu or Izumi Kami Kaneshige, who is a teacher of Kotetsu.
Yasusada’s swords were said to be sharp and many of his works have the cutting inscription by Yamano Kauemon, a test cutter in mid-Edo period. His sword was popular among samurai in the end of Edo period and is known to have been owned by Okita Souji, a swordsman in the Shinsengumi.

Aoi Art’s Comment: Meny of Yasusada’s work have cutting inscriptions by Yamano Nagahisa. They may have been close together.
