\nThis piece is ranked as Jyo Saku for Mumei(Shinto Jumyo).
\nHabaki: Single copper habaki with silver iroe.
\nBlade Length: 55.4 cm (21.81 in).
\nCurvature: 0.6 cm (0.24 in).
\nMekugi Hole: 1.
\nWidth at Base (Motohaba): 2.8 cm (1.10 in).
\nWidth at Yokote: 2.1 cm (0.83 in).
\nThickness of rim (Kasane): 0.7 cm (0.28 in).
\nSword Weight: 500 g.
\nEra: Around the Kanbun era (1661\u20131673), Edo period.
\nShape: A wakizashi with a slightly wide mihaba, somewhat thick kasane, moderately deep curvature, and an elongated kissaki.
\nJigane: Ko-itame hada with fine ji-nie.<\/p>\n

Hamon: Gunome-midare. The boshi turns back in a rounded form.
\nFeatures: Although unsigned, this blade has been attributed to Shint\u014d Jumy\u014d. During the Edo period, swords by the Jumy\u014d school were regarded as auspicious because of the name “Jumy\u014d” (long life) and were said to have been chosen as wedding gifts and other ceremonial presents.
\nKoshirae: Imperial Japanese Navy military mounting (Kaigun Gunt\u014d Koshirae).<\/p>\n

Aoi Art\u2019s Comment: During World War II, officers of the Imperial Japanese Army and Navy, as well as some non-commissioned personnel, were permitted to carry swords. Much of the Imperial Japanese Navy’s equipment was lost at sea, making surviving naval mountings considerably rarer than their army counterparts. In contrast, many army mountings survived because they were taken home as war trophies. This koshirae is an authentic Imperial Japanese Navy military mounting from the wartime period. The blade itself is an Edo-period wakizashi and was most likely fitted into this mounting after the war.<\/p>\n

Historical Background: Japan’s participation in World War II (the Pacific War) came to an end on August 15, 1945 (Showa 20), when Emperor Sh\u014dwa announced Japan’s acceptance of the Potsdam Declaration in a nationwide radio broadcast known as the Gyokuon-h\u014ds\u014d. Internationally, however, the war is generally considered to have ended on September 2, 1945, when Japan signed the Instrument of Surrender. Those who served as soldiers during the war would now be over 100 years of age.<\/p>\n
