This blade, attributed to Mumei Yamato Aritoshi, is ranked as J\u014dj\u014d-saku (Superior Work).<\/p>\n<p>Habaki: Double Habaki with Gold Foil Covering<\/p>\n<p>Blade Length: 69.2 cm (27.24 in)<br \/>\nCurvature: 2.2 cm (0.87 in)<br \/>\nMekugi-ana: 3 (2 plugged)<br \/>\nMotohaba: 2.88 cm (1.13 in)<br \/>\nSakihaba: 1.87 cm (0.74 in)<br \/>\nKasane: 0.65 cm (0.26 in)<br \/>\nBlade Weight: 585 g<\/p>\n<p>Period: Kot\u014d, around the J\u014dji era of the Nanbokuch\u014d period (1362\u20131368)<\/p>\n<p>Shape:<br \/>\nThe blade has an average width with a b\u014dhi groove. It displays a deep curvature, and the kissaki is of standard proportion.<\/p>\n<p>Jigane:<br \/>\nThe steel shows a well-forged itame-hada grain with a distinct utsuri appearing in the ji.<\/p>\n<p>Hamon:<br \/>\nA hamon close to suguha, featuring prominent nij\u016bba (double temper line) with fine ko-ashi. The boshi is in hakikake style and finishes in an almost yakitsume boshi.<\/p>\n<p>Features:<br \/>\nThis sword was designated as Mumei (Yamato Ch\u014d-Aritoshi) on its Tokubetsu Kich\u014d appraisal and attributed to Aritoshi of the Yamato Taima School. Aritoshi is said to have borne the title Ch\u014dbei-no-j\u014d and also forged swords in Toba, Yamashiro Province. &#8220;Ch\u014d-Aritoshi&#8221; is generally considered to be an abbreviated form of Ch\u014dbei-no-j\u014d Aritoshi.<\/p>\n<p>This blade exhibits the characteristic workmanship of the Yamato Taima School, including long nij\u016bba with ko-ashi appearing within the temper line and an almost yakitsume boshi. According to Fujishiro&#8217;s reference on Japanese swordsmiths, Aritoshi is highly ranked as J\u014dj\u014d-saku (Superior Work), and this sword is an excellent example of his distinctive style.<\/p>\n<p>Koshirae:<\/p>\n<p>Tsuba:<br \/>\nMade of plain copper with shakud\u014d decoration, depicting a small boat moored along a riverbank beside a rustic thatched hut, while birds fly in the distant landscape.<\/p>\n<p>Fuchi-Kashira:<br \/>\nPlain copper fittings. The kashira is decorated with a dragon, while the fuchi depicts a tiger.<\/p>\n<p>Saya:<br \/>\nA decorative lacquered scabbard finished in an unusual style, adorned with a family crest in gold.<\/p>\n<p>Menuki:<br \/>\nFinely crafted gilt dokko (Buddhist ritual vajra) ornaments.<\/p>\n<p>Seppa:<br \/>\nTwo copper seppa covered with 18-karat gold.<\/p>\n<p>Historical Background:<br \/>\nThe J\u014dji era (1362\u20131368) of the Northern Court during the Nanbokuch\u014d period was a time of significant political upheaval within the Muromachi Shogunate. Internal conflicts, including the aftermath of the Kann\u014d Disturbance, reshaped the balance of power, eventually leading to the succession of Ashikaga Yoshimitsu as shogun.
