\nShape: This is a very sound piece with wide mihaba (blade width), thick kasane, remaining ubuha (original edge), and a deep curvature with an extended kissaki.
\nJigane: Well-forged ko-itame hada.
\nHamon: Nie-deki with gunome-midare, well-forged from the hamachi to the kissaki.<\/p>\n

Features: Most ofKawai Hisayuki(Kyuko)\u2019s works were made after the age of 50.
\nHe passed away in September, 1868 (Meiji 1) at the age of 83.
\nIt is deeply impressive that he was able to produce such a long blade while preserving much of the original edge (ubuha).<\/p>\n

Aoi Art\u2019s Comment: This is a katana with a blade length of 84.6 cm (33.31 in).
\nIt retains a long ubuha and has been well-polished.
\nIt is likely to have been regarded as an exceptional piece even at the time of its creation.
\nThe narrow shinogi width clearly reflects the characteristics of that period.<\/p>\n

Historical Context: In 1876 (Meiji 9), the Hait\u014drei (Sword Abolishment Edict) was officially issued.
\nAll swordsmiths were forced to cease their work.
\nNo one was allowed to continue sword production, and they had to transition to other occupations.
\nSince all sword-making stopped at once, it must have been a time of significant upheaval.
\nThe spirit of the samurai who kept these swords in their homes and preserved them until the later Meiji period must have been truly remarkable.
\nFrom the later Meiji era into the Taisho period, sword-making was permitted again, and many swords were produced.<\/p>\n
