Features:\u3000Chounsai Tsunatoshi was born in Kansei 10 (1798), the third son of Izumi no Kami Kunihide and a swordsmith of the Yamagata domain.
\nHe was the younger brother of Kato Tsunehide, known for his mastery of the t\u014dranba hamon.
\nHis home province was Dewa, and he served under the Uesugi family of the Yonezawa domain.
\nHe was also known as Kato Hachiro and sometimes signed as Koretoshi.
\nHe studied under Suishinshi Masahide and took the art name \u201cChoun-sai\u201d (\u9577\u904b\u658e).
\nLater, he moved to Edo and then Osaka, studying under Suzuki Harukuni, and eventually traveled through the western provinces, settling in Kumamoto.
\nIn Ansei 3 (1856), he passed on the name \u201cChoun-sai\u201d to his son Koretoshi (2nd generation Tsunatoshi) and changed his own name to \u201cChouju-sai\u201d (\u9577\u5bff\u658e).
\nFrom around Bunsei 6 (1823), he lived in the Uesugi family\u2019s Edo residence in Azabu.
\nHe passed away in Bunky\u016b 3 (1863) at age 66.<\/p>\n
