\nOn September 26th, Bunky\u016b 3 (1863), at Senju \u2014 the site where the blade test was conducted \u2014 this sword was tested on the taitai-dodan (shoulder blade target) by Yamada Yoshitoyo.
\nThis work “looks like” a late-period work by Minamoto Kiyomaro.
\nBlade length: approximately 2 shaku 4 sun 7 bu (about 74.8 cm).<\/p>\n

Written by Dr.Kanzan on an auspicious day in December, the year of Tsuchinoto tori \u5df1\u9149 (Showa 44 \/ 1969).<\/p>\n

\nShape: A wide blade with a thick and solid construction.
\nThe boshi (tip) extends long.
\nJigane: Finely forged ko-itame hada with well-developed ji-nie, resulting in a superior steel surface.
\nHamon: Nie-based, rounded gunome-midare.
\nThe boshi is also gunome-midare, forming a pointed tip and returning.<\/p>\n

Features: Kiyohito was the most prominent disciple of Kiyomaro and is recognized as one of the leading swordsmiths of the Kiyomaro school.
\nHe was born in 1827 (Bunsei 10) in Dewa (present-day Tsuruoka City, Yamagata Prefecture).
\nAt the age of 12, he was adopted by the Saito family of Shonai and took the name Ichiro Saito.
\nAt 26, in April of 1848 (Kaei 1), he moved to Edo.
\nIn 1852 (Kaei 5), he became a disciple of Kiyomaro.
\nHe later relocated to Kanda.
\nAfter the death of his master Kiyomaro\u2014who had left behind numerous unfinished orders\u2014Kiyohito, being the top disciple, completed all of Kiyomaro\u2019s remaining commissions, supported his widow and children, and helped to repay his debts.
\nHe is remembered as a man of great loyalty and compassion.
\nIn 1867 (Keio 3), Kiyoto traveled to Kyoto and was awarded the prestigious title “Buzen no Kami Fujiwara Kiyohito.”
\nIn 1870 (Meiji 3), he forged a sword dedicated to Emperor Meiji.
\nHe passed away in 1901 (Meiji 34).
\nThis work by Fujiwara Kiyohito bears a cutting test inscription and is of ample length.
\nIt is a solidly built, magnificent sword.<\/p>\n
