is a superb Tachi crafted by Sumitani Masamine, a Living National Treasure.<br \/>\nIt features a dignified and deep curvature with an extended kissaki and excellent shape.<br \/>\nThe blade displays vibrant activity such as sunagashi and kinsuji.<\/p>\n<p>Sumitani Masamine, born Sumitani Yoichiro, graduated from the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Ritsumeikan University in 1941.<br \/>\nHe then apprenticed under swordsmith Sakurai Masayuki.<br \/>\nHe established the Nihonto Tanrensho \u201cSanryutei\u201d in the city of Matsuto, producing many works.<br \/>\nIn the 1960s, he won the highest award for newly-made swords, the Masamune Prize, three times.<br \/>\nOn April 20, 1981, he was designated a Living National Treasure.<br \/>\nThat same year, he was also recognized as a holder of Important Intangible Cultural Property for &#8220;Japanese Swords.&#8221;<br \/>\nHe researched steel production, developed his own smelting process, and perfected a unique choji-midare called \u201cSumitani Choji.\u201d<br \/>\nHe also crafted swords for the Imperial Family, including a mamori-gatana (protective sword) presented to the Emperor.<br \/>\nHe passed away on December 12,
