Era: Between the Ouei era in the Muromachi period to the mid Muromachi period
Shape: This Ken has 2 Shinogi and it gets thicker towards the tip.
Jigane: Itamehada is mixed with Mokumehada. Utsuri appears near Habakimoto, and after that Shirake-Utsuri appears.
Hamon: Nijuba and Ko-Gunomemidare. Flowing Kinsuji works and Ashi works well.

Special Feature: NBTHK has judged this as Suetegai. Suetegai is a name for the swordsmiths groups of Tegai school after the Ouei era, and famous smiths are Kanenaga, Kagekiyo, Kaneyuki, Kametoshi, and Kanemasa. This work has only 1 Mekugi hole, so we can see that it had been preserved very gently. Tsuruta judged it to be made in around 1467, the Onin era. Judging this item as “Suetegai” is kinda rough judgement, we suppose, we have to judge the item from Jigane, how good means how old. Kinsuji is working well in Hachu, maybe it means that it was rather older. Ken was used for Gomadaki, Japanese religious ritual, in shrines and temples, so this item had also been preserved really gently.

Koshirae:
Tsuba: Copper Hamidashi Tsuba.
Fuchikashira: On Shakudo-Nanako plate, flying wild duck is engraved with gold color.
Saya: Red and black Kawari-Nuri Saya.(Strange painted Saya)
Menuki: On a brass plate, the gate of cherry blossoms are engraved with gold color.
Kozuka: On Shakudo-Nanako plate, a pestle and a hammer are engraved with gold color.

From Aoi Art: Old Ken is really rare and precious. Especially if we have ones, they are seldom well-made. This one has Kinsuji, it is really rare. Also, it has only one Mekugi hole, we are so grateful that this item had been preserved from the Muromachi period to today. Jigane is also well-grained and Shirake-Utsuri appears. We truly recommend you to preserve this item by yourself.
