Special feature:Sword smiths group called as “Shitahara” moved to Edo between the late Muromachi period and the early Edo period, made swords mainly in near Hachioji. Their Jigane is very unique and called as “Yakumo Kitae”, their works have often Shirake Utsuri and patterns are really visible in their Jigane. As famous sword smiths amongst them, we have Musashi Tarou Yasukuni for Daibosatsu Toge, Chikashige, Yasushige and Terushige. Their swords are not so gorgeous, but they have atmosphere of Koto. Sometimes they engrave on the blade, which is always beautiful.

Fuchikashira: Copper plate, birds are engraved with Shakudo inlay.

From Aoi Art: Shitahara Kaji was not gorgeous and looked plain and normal, so they are not very popular, but after the manager of NBTHK, Goto Yasutaka has done an exhibition of Bushu-Shitahara mainly by the items which he collected by himself, many characteristics of the sword smiths became clear. The biggest characteristic of them is the Jigane called “Yakumo Kitae”. Besides, their Nakago is like Muramasa, they made often Suguha Hamon: really popular amongst Nihonto fans who like chic swords. Ubu-Mumei is extremely rare and the blade is well-made. NBTHK has judged this sword as Shitahara Hiroshige.
