Special feature: Gassan Sadakazu 1st generation was a sword smith in
Settsu. His real name is Gassan Yagoro. He was born in February in
1836 in Koshu Sukoshimura, and adopted by Gassan Sadayoshi at
the age of 7. He started sword making training when he was 11, and
mastered Ayasugi-hada at the age of 20. He didn’t stop making swords
after the Haitorei (decrees abolishing the wearing of swords in
public) in 1877, and in 1892 he exhibited a sword at the World’s
Columbian Exposition and won an award, the sword was bought by
Meiji Tenno in the next year. He was appointed to an Imperial
Household Artist in April of 1906. He was also a famous sculptor. He passed
away at the age of 84 in 1918. His sword production period is from
1850(at the age of 15) to 1918. His Jigane often has well- grained
Koitame, to be like plain with Jinie, and sometimes has Utsuri,
Masame-hada or Ayasugi-hada.
From Aoi Art:Gassan Sadakazu was a sword maker passed times from the
late Edo period, Haitorei at Meiji 4, and to the times when they are

allowed to make swords again. He had a great opportunity of making

swords because of the Russia-Japan War and the China-Japan War,
and finally got the post as an Imperial Household Artist, and after that
he made a lot of swords until he died. This sword is probably a Shikito
of Japanese marine or army in the Meiji period. This is a great work which we
truly recommend for you. Besides, this sword has a cert of NBTHK
Koshu Kicho Hozon Token, but we assure that this will pass the Hozon Token.
