Special feature: Sagami (No) Kami Masatsune the First was born in Mino province. As
establishing a branch family, he moved to Komaki in 1567. He became the Sagami (No)
Kami in May 1591. Following Matsudaira Tadayoshi, the fourth son of Tokugawa Ieyasu,
Masatsune moved to Seishu province in 1600. He retired and his son succeeded the
swordsmith name Masatsune as the Second in 1607 but died suddenly only two years
later. The First made a fresh start using the signature Masatsune-Nyudo. It is said that
he passed away in 1619, aged 84.
He was very good at forging Yari and naginata. Most of his surviving works are Hira-zukuri
wakizashi or tanto. To the contrary, his Shinogi-zukuri katana and wakizashi are
extremely rare.
Though this is a Hira-zukuri Wakziashi influenced by Mino style, it shows different
workmanship of his usual works. The thoroughly tempered fine texture of jitetsu is a point
worthy of appreciation.

From Aoi Art: Sagami Kami Masatsune has long been a highly
acclaimed swordsmith and has been carefully preserved by many
sword collectors.
Therefore, it is hard to come out on the market. The number of
single-sided cutting blades (Katagiri ba)in this work is small, and
the result is excellent.
Especially Deep Nioikuchi Gunome Midare Hamon is an unrivaled
work of other swordsmiths.
When I see the Japanese sword that has been splendidly made and
aggravated, I am not surprised by the work in the blade and
top-class Jigane and Hamon.
Koshirae I am confident that you will be satisfied because it is quite
well done.
